Matt's Legacy Lives On Through Every Life We Touch

As we gather each year for the Matt's Homestead annual fundraiser, we come together not only to raise funds and awareness, but to celebrate a life that continues to inspire kindness, compassion, and service long after it ended.

Matt had a way of making people feel seen. He cared deeply about others and had a natural ability to bring people together. While his loss left an unimaginable void for those who loved him, his legacy continues to shine through the work being done every day in his name.

When Matt's Homestead was founded, the goal was simple: to help individuals in early recovery access the basic resources and support they need to rebuild their lives. What began as a small effort fueled by love and hope has grown into a community-wide mission powered entirely by volunteers, donors, sponsors, and supporters who believe that everyone deserves a chance to succeed.

The impact of that mission continues to grow.

Since our last picnic in September 2025, Matt's Homestead has already helped 389 individuals on their recovery journey. Whether through transportation assistance, clothing for employment, household necessities, recovery resources, or simply being a source of encouragement during difficult times, each person served represents another opportunity to create hope where it is needed most.

This work would not be possible without the incredible generosity of our sponsors, donors, volunteers, and community partners. Your support allows us to respond quickly when someone reaches out for help and ensures that resources are available when they are needed most.

We are especially grateful to the many individuals who work behind the scenes throughout the year—organizing donations, coordinating outreach efforts, processing applications, delivering resources, and spreading awareness about our mission. Every act of service, no matter how big or small, helps carry Matt's legacy forward.

As founder Jennifer Barba often reminds us, recovery is not something anyone should have to navigate alone. Behind every application is a person, a family, and a story. Sometimes the smallest act of kindness—a bus pass, a pair of work boots, groceries, or a few words of encouragement—can make all the difference in helping someone continue moving forward.

Today, we celebrate not only Matt's memory, but the community that has formed around his legacy. Together, we have built something truly special: a network of people committed to helping others find hope, dignity, connection, and a path toward healing.

Thank you for standing with us, believing in our mission, and helping us continue this important work.

Together, we are changing lives.

Together, we are creating hope.

And together, we are ensuring that Matt's legacy continues to live on through every person we serve.

🎉 Exciting News: Matt's Homestead is Now a 501(c)(3) Nonprofit! 🎉

We are delighted to share a significant milestone in our journey. Matt's Homestead has officially received 501(c)(3) nonprofit status, a designation that recognizes our commitment to supporting individuals in recovery from addiction. This achievement underscores our dedication to creating a positive impact in the lives of those who need it most.

What does this mean for our supporters? It means that your contributions and support have taken us to a new level of impact. As a 501(c)(3) organization, we can now more effectively channel resources, provide essential services, and continue our mission-driven work. This status also offers potential tax benefits to our generous donors. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all who have been part of this journey so far, and we invite you to stay connected with us for updates on how we'll be using this new status to expand our reach and better serve our community.

Thank you for standing with us as we make a difference—one life at a time. Together, we are stronger, and together, we can achieve lasting change. Stay tuned for more updates, events, and opportunities to join us in supporting those on their path to recovery.

2022 letter

A letter from Jennifer (2022)

All of our volunteers at last year’s event.

We are excited to announce we will be hosting our annual picnic on Saturday, September 17, 2022 at the Keystone House located at 1715 Whitney Avenue in Hamden, CT 06517. Our annual event is held in memory of Matt Barba, who died on December 16, 2016. The event is free and located at the sober house, which was Matt Barba’s dream and project before he died.

After more than 2 years of uncertainty for all of us, we are looking forward to connection, support and togetherness. We welcome all members of the community and beyond to join us as we fundraise and raise awareness about the disease of addiction. In an effort to maximize exposure of this event, we invite you to participate by attending or making a donation. The picnic will be held from 12-4pm on September 17th with a raffle drawing at 2:30pm. There will be a pizza truck, music, a dunk tank and a corn hole tournament with prizes.

Since the founding of the Matt's Homestead, we have provided assistance to over 1,000 people with bus passes, basic essential toiletries, groceries and work clothing such as work boots, outdoor construction clothing, shirts/ties and female dress clothing for new employment.

Thank you in advance for your interest and support of this event. Everyone assisting is a volunteer. All funds go directly to those requesting assistance. Many individuals in recovery will be touched by your generosity and caring.

Warm Regards,

Jennifer Barba, LCSW
